# VSB Trustee Candidates Talk Climate and AI **October 10, 2026** On October 6th, 2026, Vancouver School Board trustee candidates shared their views on generative AI in schools and climate change. This event was organized by parents with [For Our Kids Vancouver](https://www.forourkids.ca/vancouver) and PACES Vancouver. All parties were invited to send a representative, and attendees included trustee candidates from COPE, OneCity, Vancouver Greens, Vancouver Liberals, and Vote Vancouver. Due to a miscommunication, two candidates participated for Vancouver Liberals. Watch [the recording on YouTube](https://youtu.be/i2KL41zJdf8?si=64bsv6LxK4s2pMvd) to learn where each party stands on the issues of climate change and generative AI in schools. Also check out [Vancouver parties' responses](https://aicaution.ca/election/sd39-vsb/) to our question about their stance on generative AI and chatbots in schools. Advanced voting is open, and the final day to vote is October 17th! Let's vote AI out of schools! ## Event format and the questions After a round of introduction, each candidate took turn answering the following three questions provided to them in advance: 1. Studies show that the use of generative AI in classrooms harms students’ learning and mental health. Teachers are also concerned and skeptical of the promise of AI. What is your plan to protect students from these concerns related to AI use? 2. We are concerned that schools aren’t providing our kids with the knowledge and tools they need to prepare for the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss. What can Vancouver School Board trustees do to ensure our children are educated about these twin crises? 3. We believe it’s important for students to learn how to evaluate misinformation and disinformation which is increasingly being introduced through social media, AI, and the fossil fuel industry. If elected, how would you address these concerns? At the end, we had time for the candidates to answer three out of 20+ questions submitted by the audience.
