# Policy Proposals These are rough drafts of policy proposals that we think would help teachers, students and parents. ## 1. Train teachers The [[2026-09-01 Only 16% of teachers think AI helps students|results of the BCTF survey]] make it clear that teachers have very strong skepticism of the "promise" AI. They feel that the technology is coming into schools without enough of their input. From talking with many teachers we also know that there is not enough training. There is a lot of money and talk from AI companies on training teachers **how to use AI**. Training sessions from companies like Microsoft and SchoolAI where teachers are taught how to use AI tools to offload thinking. We believe that students would benefit most from teachers learning **what AI is** and the **effects of AI on education**: - 1.1. Teachers must receive training on AI. - 1.1. a) The training must be provided by a reputable third party, not by a company with a financial interest in AI being introduced into schools. ## 2. Pause AI in schools There is enough [[What science says|scientific evidence showing the harms of AI]] to warrant **pausing its use in schools**. Concretely this means: - 2.1. Students will not have access to generative AI chatbots in school. - 2.2. Any sites featuring generative AI like ChatGPT should be blocked on school networks. - 2.3. Search engines that return "AI summaries" should have those summaries disabled. - 2.4. Any tools that offer AI features would have those features disabled. Where disabling them is not possible, those tools would not be used. ## 3. Have independent experts teach about AI to highschoolers Students must learn what AI is, how it works, and what its effects are on society, and the environment. Pausing its use within schools is to minimise its negative effect on learning. Students would still benefit from an understanding of AI, while avoiding its use. - 3.1. Students age 16 and above must have a class in which they learn about what AI is, how it works, its effects on society, the environment, learning.
